We all are fan of Bollywood songs but do you know anything about their originality? How Indian movie makers started putting songs in their films? Sangeet Natak (meaning Musical Drama which was inspired by Sanskrit drama's) is prime influence for Bollywood songs. (Other influences are Hollywood, Musical televisions, Indian Epics, Theatre of India, etc)
No doubt that Bollywood songs are rocking but how much you are familiar with Sangeet Nataka?
Sangeet Nataka's played a vital role in the development of Marathi theatre and thus the Marathi cinema as well as Indian film industry. But today, Sangeet Nataka is in critical condition and someone needs to pull it up.
When we call 'someone', the first name comes "Subodh Bhave" as his latest release "Balgandharva" opened golden memories of Marathi theatre. The new generation is appreciating Subodh's look and also demanding for Sangeet Nataka's by him. Fan-pages on Facebook are getting more and more fans everyday. If Subodh took it seriously then nothing is impossible.
Nataka's like Shaakuntal, Sangeet Saubhadra, Sangeet Maanaapmaan, Sangeet Sharda, Ekach Pyaala are still not within the reach of young generation. Though people are interested it in they cant enjoy it. Today, we have very few information on Sangeet Nataka and very few people knows famous roles in it.
Something must be done now otherwise our next generation will ask question "Sangeet Natak : What is it?"
